Father and son Mini restoration duo to headline UK Garage & Bodyshop Event

by CAT

The UK Garage & Bodyshop Event has confirmed that the father-and-son team behind a viral Mini restoration project will appear at the event held at the NEC, Birmingham in June.

Twelve-year-old Ben and his father, Gary, will share their story of rebuilding a classic Mini, a project started when Ben was 10 years old.

The project began as Gary’s initiative to encourage Ben to develop practical skills away from digital screens. The goal is to complete the restoration by Ben’s 16th birthday so he can drive the car to his school prom. Documenting their progress online, the pair has gained a significant following while showcasing Ben’s development in welding, grinding, and engine stripping.

Speaking about the experience, Ben said: “I’ve learnt welding, grinding, how to strip my first ever engine, replacing panels, and it’s all thanks to my dad. I’m just lucky.”

Gary added: “All the kids these days are computer-based. There’s very few with practical skills now. This has brought us together; I’ve had to learn patience and Ben’s had to learn the skills.”

The appearance of "The Mini Boys" is intended to inspire the next generation of technicians by demonstrating the results of hands-on learning and mentorship. Joanne Knowles, event director at Messe Frankfurt, organisers of the UK Garage & Bodyshop Event, said: “Ben and Gary’s story is incredibly inspiring and highlights exactly why it’s so important to engage the next generation with hands-on skills. Their journey shows what can be achieved with the right support, encouragement and passion, and we’re delighted to welcome them to this year’s event.”

The UK Garage and Bodyshop Event returns to the NEC on 3-4 June, bringing together leading brands to showcase the latest tools, technology and training for the garage, bodyshop and detailing sectors. Registration is open now and free for trade visitors, for tickets visit here.
